What Is Triman and Does My Packaging Need It in France?
Triman is the French symbol indicating that a product or packaging item is subject to a sorting rule. It is generally used together with the French Info-tri, which tells consumers what to do with each packaging component at end of life.
For food and beverage brands, the practical question is not simply whether the pack is recyclable. The business must identify which French extended producer responsibility, or REP, scheme applies to the packaging placed on the French market and which marking/information obligations follow from that status.
Household packaging
For household packaging, French rules have required the sorting information framework for years. Producers or importers placing packaged products on the French market generally organise their REP obligations through an approved eco-organisation. The eco-organisation provides the approved Triman/Info-tri files and reporting framework.
The exact party considered the producer or marketer depends on the commercial chain, so foreign brands should confirm responsibility with their French importer or representative rather than assuming the retailer will handle it.
2026 also matters for professional packaging
France's packaging REP framework has expanded, and from 1 July 2026 the professional-packaging REP scheme is in force. That means brands selling through B2B channels should distinguish household packaging from professional packaging and not rely on an old consumer-packaging checklist for every case.
The practical obligations can depend on who places the packaging on the French market, the packaging type and the sales channel.
Do not copy a Triman graphic from Google
Use the current marking supplied by the relevant approved eco-organisation or official system. The Info-tri design and instructions are part of the compliance framework and can change. A generic recycling symbol or the Green Dot is not a substitute for the applicable French sorting information.
Packaging compliance should be reviewed alongside the food label because both affect the final artwork.
C&C Brokers can include France packaging obligations in the launch review
When France is a target market, we can flag the packaging/REP workstream alongside the ingredient, label, importer and commercial checks so it is solved before retail deployment.
This is a practical compliance overview; the exact REP setup should be confirmed for the entity and packaging flow that will place the product on the French market.

Do I need recycling symbols as well?
In France, a generic recycling symbol is not a substitute for the applicable Triman and Info-tri framework. The exact obligation depends on the packaging stream and on the business placing the packaged product on the French market. Treat REP registration and consumer sorting information as part of the same packaging-compliance workstream.
