How to Choose the Right Distribution Channels for Your Beverage Brand in Europe

When entering a new market, many beverage brands immediately aim for the largest national retailers.

However, supermarkets and hypermarkets are not always the most appropriate starting point.

The right distribution channel depends on the product, price positioning, target consumer, production capacity and the resources available to support the launch.

Specialist Retailers

Premium grocery stores, international food retailers, specialist chains and concept stores are often more receptive to new and distinctive products.

These outlets can help a brand test its positioning, observe consumer reactions and establish its first commercial references.

They generally accept lower initial volumes than large retailers. However, reaching a fragmented network of independent stores requires sustained prospecting and regular account management.

Wholesalers and Distributors

A wholesaler or distributor can provide access to an established network of professional customers.

Its network may cover a specific region, product category or channel, such as beverages, foodservice, ethnic retail, convenience stores or premium grocery outlets.

The addition of an intermediary naturally affects the available margin. The price structure must therefore be designed from the beginning to accommodate the commercial and logistical costs incurred by each participant.

A product with insufficient margin may attract interest but remain commercially unviable.

Large-Scale Retail

National and regional retail chains offer significant volume potential, but their expectations are considerably higher.

A brand must be able to maintain supply, meet logistical requirements, guarantee regulatory compliance and, in many cases, contribute to promotional or in-store activation campaigns.

A retail listing does not automatically guarantee consumer demand. Without visibility, promotion and effective activation, a new product can quickly be removed from the shelves.

For this reason, large-scale retail is often more effective once the brand has already demonstrated demand through smaller or more specialised channels.

Foodservice

Restaurants, hotels, cafés, chains and franchises can be excellent channels for beverages with a clear consumption occasion.

This may include products designed for:

  • meal accompaniment;

  • mixology;

  • on-the-go consumption;

  • premium hospitality;

  • alcohol-free alternatives.

Foodservice also allows consumers to discover a beverage in a controlled and potentially more rewarding environment.

E-commerce

E-commerce provides direct access to consumers and can quickly generate data about demand, marketing messages and price sensitivity.

However, beverages are relatively heavy and expensive to ship. Selling individual units may therefore be difficult to make profitable.

Discovery boxes, mixed cases, bundles and limited collections are often more suitable for online sales.

Build the Channels in the Right Order

The most effective strategy rarely consists of selecting a single distribution channel.

Instead, it involves introducing the channels in the right sequence: testing the product, gathering market feedback, building commercial references and gradually increasing volumes.

C&C helps international beverage brands identify their priority channels and establish the commercial relationships required to build a sustainable presence in Europe.
