Do French Supermarkets Buy Directly From Foreign Brands?
Sometimes, yes. A French supermarket group can buy directly from a foreign brand, but a direct commercial relationship does not remove the operational requirements behind the listing. The product still needs to be compliant for France, the importer and responsible operator structure must be clear, and the retailer needs a workable supply chain.
For many emerging brands, the practical route is therefore direct buyer contact combined with a local import, warehousing or distribution partner.
Direct buying does not mean direct shipping from the factory
A retailer may negotiate directly with the brand while deliveries are executed through an importer, logistics partner or distributor. Commercial ownership and physical flow can be separated.
What buyers generally want is reliability: stable price, clear lead time, traceability, sufficient shelf life, EAN/GTIN, case and pallet data, compliant labels and a supplier able to react when something goes wrong.
The route depends on the retailer and category
Some French groups have central purchasing structures, while others combine national agreements with regional or store-level decisions. Imported niche products can also enter through specialist wholesalers before reaching larger retail networks.
Do not assume that one successful store test automatically equals national distribution.
When a distributor still makes sense
A distributor can be valuable when the brand needs local sales coverage, smaller drops, multi-customer delivery or category expertise. The trade-off is an additional margin layer. The right structure depends on the target retail price and the expected sales velocity.
For premium or differentiated products, a test-and-scale model is often safer than building a national distribution structure before demand is proven.
C&C Brokers can separate buyer access from import execution
C&C Brokers can approach buyers, structure the European import/compliance route and decide with the brand whether direct retail, distributor-led sales or a hybrid model makes the most sense.
